Selection Process
2026 Capital City Club Championship Team Selection Process
Our league, the Country Club Swim League of Atlanta, completes each season with a Championship Meet.
The meet this year is at Georgia Tech’s Aquatic Center on Sunday, June 28th.
Effective since the 2018 season, the league rules stipulate that each team is allowed to enter TWO relay teams per age-group & gender and TWO swimmers per individual event. Each swimmer is limited to two relay events and two individual events. With over 280 swimmers on our team, selecting a team of so few swimmers will be extremely challenging. However, we will spend a tremendous amount of time evaluating the results from each meet this season and I believe our process to be fair and consistent. Our goal is to put together a team that gives individual swimmers as well as the team the best opportunity to succeed.
When announced on Tuesday, June 23, the Capital City Club Championship Team will have swimmers that have been selected to swim a specific event as well as “alternate” swimmers that will compete if someone gets sick and/or injured prior to the meet. Alternates are an equal and important part of the team and will be treated as such. In turn, we ask that alternates attend Championship Team practices and events. There is a chance that alternates will not get to compete in the meet, but they need to be ready to go if called upon!
There are several steps that we go thru when selecting a swimmer for an event-let’s pretend “Joe” is an 8-year-old boy on our team:
1. Establish “Joe” and "Jack" are the two fastest CCC swimmers for a particular event by their results at this year’s dual meets (to include Waveapalooza).
2. Double check all of “Joe and Jack's” times for all meets to confirm their consistency. So, if “Jimmy” beat “Joe” and/or "Jack"one time by .06, but every other meet “Joe” and/or "Jack" beat “Jimmy” by 5 seconds, "Joe" and "jack" will still be selected. For, “Joe” and "Jack" could have had an off night and/or “Jimmy’s” time could have been incorrect. If “Joe”, "Jack" and “Jimmy’s” times are consistently close (separated by less than a half second), we will look at "head to head" match-ups, and compare the top times from the same meets.
3. If “Joe” and "Jack" are the fastest swimmers in several events, we will evaluate the full list of times from every swimmer in the league and select the events that “Joe” and "Jack" have the best chance for success/finish the highest place/score the most points for the team.
4. An important variable to consider, particularly with the younger swimmers in breaststroke and butterfly, is the “legality” of the stroke. Meaning, will the swimmer be disqualified at the meet with their current stroke? So, if “Joe” is the fastest breaststroker but he has an “illegal” kick and “Jimmy” is the second fastest with a “legal” stroke, “Jimmy” will likely be selected. For, knowingly putting “Joe” in an event that we know he will not have success in is not fair to him or the team. This will hold true when selecting medley relays swimmers as well. It is highly likely that the stroke and turn judges at this meet will far more stringent than our dual meets. And, they will likely have more of them!
5. Alternates are selected by following the process above, but the “third best choice” for each respective event.
6. Relays will be selected based on the above, but will include eight swimmers (two full relays) and two alternates.
Again, we believe the above steps to be fair and consistent, and will give the swimmers and the team the best chance to succeed.
We need to know you will be in town before we can consider you for the meet! Please sign-in (or out) for the meet on the swim team website "www.cccwaves.swimtopia.org". Please let us know as soon as possible so we can plan accordingly! Please know we will still go thru the outlined selection process to select the team, we are only asking you to indicate if you will be available to participate if selected.
A few additional notes about the Championship team:
1. The team will be finalized after the final dual meet and will be announced on Tuesday, June 23 at 6:00pm.
2. The Championship team will continue to practice until the meet. Please see the schedule posted under the Championship Team Events and Practice Schedule tab.
3. All Championship Team Members will receive a new Championship Team t-shirt, a (silicone) team cap, a special ride to the meet and dinner after the meet. A fee/swimmer will be billed to each member's account to help offset these expenses.
4. We will have a Championship Team supper on Friday, June 26 after afternoon practice at the Capital City Brookhaven location starting at 5:15pm.
5. We will have a party at the Club after the final event of the Championship Meet on Sunday, June 28.
This is an exciting time for all of the swimmers and I look forward to capping off a great season with a strong showing at the Championship Meet!
Regards,
Coach Ryan
